I’ve done a few “creative reruns” – like pre-composed solos, but alive with the feel of improv during composition – following the outline given by Christiaan Van Hemert on his Discord. I’ve published them to a YouTube playlist. Here are a few guidelines I’m writing to myself for future creative reruns.
Learning gypsy jazz guitar repertoire can be daunting when you first start out. I’ve started learning tunes, and have an approach that seems to work for me.
In language learning, a “word family” is a group of words that are based on a common word. For example, in English, the word “hospital” could be in a family like “hospital, hospitalize, hospitable, inhospitable, hospitality …” etc, ignoring conjugations. In Spanish, “sondar” (to sound, as in measure depth) could be in a family “sondar, sondear, sonda, insondable, sondaje …”. As I read more, I see more connections between words that are similar forms. It would be nice if Lute supported such a thing.
For the past few months, I’ve been working on Volume 2 of the Van Hemert System for learning Gypsy Jazz guitar. I managed to work through the seven chapters rather quickly, and so am sharing my approach in hopes that it helps others in their practice.
